It’s All About Good Friends!

It was a clear and sunny Friday morning last week, as our car was pointed westward — away from the hustle-and-bustle of daily life in Phoenix — towards the ever-beautiful Western Coast.  We both smiled at the thought of filling our eyes with a view of the Pacific Ocean.

The next day, we joined a family wedding reception to congratulate a wonderful young couple as they began their married life — congratulations, Monica and J!  Your party was just wonderful.

The following day we stopped by Tower 23 at Pacific Beach (or PB as they call it there!) for an outdoor lunch, listening to the waves melodically crashing against the beach.  We smiled again as we felt the cool breeze coming off the ocean and filled our lungs with the fresh scent of the salt air.  We clinked our Bloody Mary and Mohito glasses in celebration.

We watched as “Slomo” glided by on the sidewalk.  For those of you not familiar with him, he has been cruising the sidewalk at PB for many years, headphones on, inline skates strapped on, and arms out to his side as if he were flying, while maintaining a perfect arabesque position.  People who recognize him reach out and slap his hand as he glides by.  The back story on him is hardly what anyone would guess – a retired neurosurgeon who also happens to have had psychiatric training, as well, living a life that he describes as being very fulfilling and extremely spiritual.  Yes, we smiled, as we watched him glide by.  Nothing’s changed in PB!

That evening, we were invited to our special  friends’ home for dinner.  Meet Steve and Maggie:

Two of the most interesting and charming folks on the planet! We sat on the Plaza level of their high rise condominium and shared a sunset cocktail, catching up on what was new, while Steve finished up grilling some mouth-watering chicken on the barbeque.

Later, as we sat down for dinner, we enjoyed not only the superb company, but the most awesome view ever!  Take a look at this …..

Oh, yeah …. a truly OMG view!!!  Magnificent!  We thank you, Steve and Maggie, for the most wonderful and memorable evening!  You’re the best!  It will be our turn to be the host next time, but I’m pretty sure we can’t top your view!

And, all too soon, the car was again pointed eastward as we wound our way through the mountains and down onto the desert floor heading back towards Phoenix.

It was truly one of our best trips ever to San Diego and we thank Steve and Maggie for that.

After all, it’s all about good friends …..

A Big Shout Out For Larry!

WOW!  Who couldn’t love watching the Cardinal game today???

Larry Fitzgerald absolutely nailed it with stats of:

8 Receptions / 112 Yards

3 Touchdowns!

Who-Hoo, Larry!  We were all jumping up and down for you!  You were blazing today and your face just said it all!

The Arizona win over the Chicago Bears was HUGE – 48 to 23.

Bruce, you might be THE best coach anyone has seen — we’re feeling your love!

Superbowl Bound ……

While I was driving to work the other day and listening to the radio, I heard the radio host mention she had recently read an article in a magazine centered around one question:

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?

Intriguing question.

I had to do a little reflecting on just what my mental state was at 16 and quickly concluded that unless it had to do with boys, or my sorority sisters, it pretty much didn’t make it to my radar screen.  Deep, I know.

But, after a little more thought, here’s my short list:

  •   Appreciate the complexities of life — it’s what keeps it interesting
  •   Relax
  •   Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe in — others may be counting on you to speak up for them
  •   Say “I love you” often
  •   Smell the roses along the way
  •   Never miss an opportunity to say something kind (or offer to help) someone in need, but step lightly — their independence may be involved
  •   Worrying never solves anything — it just makes you tense
  •   Appreciate what you have
  •   Don’t complain about what you don’t
  •   Trust your heart
  •   Be courteous to and respectful of others — you know not what burdens they may carry
  •   Finally — smile!  It’s a universal symbol — and quite contagious!

So, now the question now begs itself to you:

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self??

I wonder why it is that we don’t pause more often to look around ourselves and appreciate what we hold so dear to our hearts? OK, maybe some of you can do it on a regular basis, but for the rest of us that feel like we’re being hurtled through life at warp speeds, well, let’s just say we’re working on it ….

Today is my husband’s birthday and it has caused me to stop and reflect on just how far we’ve come.  While we packed the day in with lots of things to smile about, it is just that — his smile — that always fills me with love.

Happy Birthday, honey … may you always be filled with beautiful reflections!

An Unexpected Visitor!

We had an unexpected visitor for lunch the other day!  The Mexican Ducks are from the Southwest and Mexico regions, once on the Endangered Species listing, but removed in 1978.  There are concerns about our environmental impact on their nesting territories.  She stayed for over an hour, basking in the pool, before eventually performing a very loud takeoff maneuver!  Gotta love a duck ….

Desert in Bloom
Desert in Bloom

A good day of shooting yesterday with Tom & Ferne.  We gave a couple of revolvers a turn, then really worked out our Glocks 17, 26 and my personal favorite — the 42!  Sweet weapon!  The desert setting was balmy and the view of Four Peaks was nothing short of majestic.

The picture above is one of my favorites showing the simplistic beauty of the desert in spring.

Wish you were all here …..
